Financial exchanges around the world took drastic steps on October 31, 2011, to address the uncertainty swirling around an embattled broker-dealer. Early that morning, before markets opened in the US, exchanges limited trades through the broker-dealer to liquidating positions only, prohibiting traders from opening new positions.
